Why Dogs Are Called Man’s Best Friend

For as long as we can remember, dogs have always been considered as man’s best friend. But why exactly is this the case? Read here to find out.

For as long as we’ve been alive, dogs have always been man’s best friend. We value them with our lives and we do our best to protect them. That’s why it’s not at all uncommon for pet owners to baby and pamper their dogs. They’re given accessories, clothes, beds, and in some cases, coverage in the form of pet insurance from good insurance companies in the Philippines. All of these are done because, in our eyes, man’s best friend deserves the best.

But why exactly are they called that? What makes them special among the pets we can have? Read below to find out.

Dogs are the first domesticated animal

According to historical and DNA evidence, dogs were the first domesticated animal. Many believe they are descended from a type of wolf that is now extinct. Initially bonding with humans for hunting and scavenging, that bond later grew due to these baby wolves being exposed to humans from birth. Since then, humans and what would later become dogs have had a long history of partnership and companionship, which continues today.

Dogs are loyal and dependable

Among many pets, dogs are known for their loyalty and dependability. They are very protective of their territory, including people they consider part of their “pack”. Furthermore, dogs also fulfill various helpful tasks, from hunting to herding farm animals and other similar assistive duties. These characteristics make them both lovable and also convenient to be with.

Dogs are good for physical and emotional health

Owning a dog is beneficial to one’s physical and mental health. Because they constantly need walks and exercise, joining them gives the owners their dose of physical activity. This does wonders to a person’s health and is attributed to a longer life. Aside from that, dogs are also good for improving one’s emotional status. Studies show that eye contact with them for 30 minutes was related to the rise of oxytocin (the “love hormone”) levels in both humans and dogs.

But even without knowing the science and history of it all, we know how happy we feel whenever our puppies play with us. All our stress melts away with just a wag of their tail and a lick to our face. They’re more than pleased to ease our worries and just spend quality time with us. Man’s best friend? Indeed.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that other pets lack in comparison. They are all still special in their own ways, and can be seen as man’s best friend the way dogs are. No matter what type of animal companion you choose to be with, as long as you’re happy with them, it’s worth it.
