What To Do With Your Car In Case Of Flooding

It’s a fact: the Philippines is a hot zone for typhoons. According to meteorologist Jeff Masters, the Philippines is located in the most tropical cyclone-prone waters on Earth. It rarely escapes a year without experiencing a devastating typhoon. This leads us to a myriad of possible dangerous situations.

Typhoons, depending on their category, can be destructive. It leaves chaos in its wake. With this in mind, it’s only right to be aware of what’s happening and be prepared before its landfall, including your cars. Vehicles are vulnerable during typhoons. Apart from that, they are very expensive to repair. Thus, knowing what to do can help your car survive the inclement weather.

Here’s what you can do:

Before it happens

Tune in to the news for any advisory about incoming typhoons. This is the most important part of being prepared, being alert and aware. If your house belongs to a flood prone area, then you have to find a secure parking spot for your vehicle. Luckily, on trying times like these, malls offer shelter and waive overnight parking fees. It would also be helpful to provide a car cover, just in case the wind’s too strong. A cover may serve as a second layer of protection. Remember, getting flooded is the last thing you want to happen to your car.

While it’s happening

It’s never recommended to go out while there’s a storm because there is a high chance you may get stuck due to flooding. When it’s as strong as Typhoon Mangkhut with a 285 km/h wind speed, expect uprooted trees, flying signages, and cut electric wires. If you live in mountain towns like Baguio City, then expect to experience landslides and rocks falling.

Avoid these situations at all costs, but if you really have to go, then proceed cautiously. Check and test all lights, brakes, and fuel to refrain from stopping while driving. Also, take note of the water level. When it’s halfway up your wheels, that’s still considered safe. However, when it’s past that level, then chances are your engine has already been breached. Moving flood water is also a no-no as your vehicle may get swept away. Remember that when in doubt, don’t.

After it happens

Give your car a wash to get the mud, grime, and dirt off and preserve its coat. You can hose it down with clean water, if you opt to not wash it with car soap yet. Keep a look out for any moisture buildup on your interiors to prevent molding and rusting. You may also seek help from a professional interior detailer to address problems with your car seats, interior car panels, and the like. Last but not the least, have it checked out. There’s no harm in doing so. This can help determine any problems or damages immediately.

These are just some of the things you can do when faced with bad weather. As they say, prevention is key. Being prepared can help you get out of financial woes a flooded car can give you. But, of course, preparation won’t be complete without a car insurance from the Philippines’ leading non-life insurance company.

Malayan Automaster is a comprehensive car insurance policy in the Philippines. It covers several benefits that can help you protect yourself, your finances, and your investment.
