Townhouses vs. Apartments: Which One is Better for You?

Many people in their mid-twenties think about moving out of their parent’s homes to become independent. But with so many options, it’s hard to decide where. Whether you’re single or not, know what you are getting into before you tie a portion of your savings to a place you would call your new home.

For the most part, buying a house and lot is undeniably expensive. And the responsibilities that come with it can overwhelm someone new to the whole experience. That’s why going for an apartment or townhouse is the best alternative. How do you know which one’s better for you? And what makes them different from one another?


Like condos, apartments are located in buildings, offering additional amenities residents can use in their free time. They are usually smaller and cheaper compared to townhouses.


Townhouses are located in community areas like subdivisions and residential cities. They are more expensive, offering a bigger space with its multi-floors. Aesthetically, they are like smaller houses, making it better for small families and people who require more space an apartment can’t provide.


Generally speaking, apartments will cost less than townhouses simply because most of them are single rooms. Situationally, apartments and condos are often marketed towards workers who require temporary (but long-term) living quarters, such as people living far away from their jobs. Apartments are usually not “rent-to-own,” which is an advantage in monthly fees and a disadvantage in lifelong costs. 

Townhouses operate similarly but with more available options. Though owning and renting a townhouse is more expensive, they are much roomier and safer than their counterparts. Families are also more likely to find townhouses with rent-to-own opportunities. It would be especially beneficial for the parents in the long run, especially if they can afford to pay a few extra thousand on the entire payment, plus personalized facility installation and decent home insurance in the Philippines.


Amenities can refer to common areas like laundry rooms, rooftop usage, bathrooms, and sometimes swimming pools, parking lots, and gyms. Affordable apartments usually have the first three facilities, and their tenants are free to use any of these amenities so long as they are used responsibly. 

Customizability and responsibilities

For both house types, customizability is limited. Apartments offer little to no customizability freedom as they must abide by the landlords’ rules. Similarly, townhouse customization and refurbishing fall under the scrutiny of the homeowners association it belongs to. Townhouse owners may also be subjected to ensure the property does not stick out like a sore thumb in the community. 


Maintenance is a little tricky for both sides. If you are renting an apartment or townhouse, the state of the building rests on the shoulders of the landlord. This includes making sure the quality of the building (structural integrity, waterflow, electricity flow, working amenities) stays in top shape. However, anything inside the rented space is usually up to the tenant’s expense. That’s why people invest in non-life insurance for their homes, to avoid financial dilemmas should disaster come from it.

Which one should I get?

As mentioned before, it’s a matter of budget and needs vs. comfort and amenities. Townhouses feel like the better option in many cases, but only for people who want to live long-term. Apartment quality varies between buildings, with some being more luxurious than the others. But overall, it is still the prime option for people who don’t want to commit to a particular house for the rest of their lives.

Still, whichever one you pick will be worth the money if you are getting in exchange is the chance to live independently.
