On average, the Bureau of Fire Protection reports 42 fire incidents in the country per day. Among all other challenges we are facing today, fire is one we don’t want to add up to the mix. Thus, installing fire protection systems and securing fire insurance in the Philippines early is a great start.

For extra safety, knowledge about the most common fire hazards can safeguard your family and yourself. Read on the top causes of fire in Philippine households you should know about, along with tips to prevent them:

Faulty electrical connections

Fire resulting from electrically-powered equipment may be triggered through overloading, arcing, and short-circuiting. These problems can occur when too many devices are plugged in all at once.

For your safety, major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet one at a time. Unplug them when not in use, and observe flickering, sizzling, or burning odor as your warning signs. Faulty electrical connections must be inspected by a professional and be repaired as soon as possible to avoid future disasters.

Cigarettes left unattended

Aside from its numerous health concerns, smoking can also result in irreversible fire-related damages and fatalities at home. Many things can catch on fire with a cigarette butt, and this can burn within 10 minutes. When left neglected in a bedroom for example, your bed sheets can be easily set on fire. If smoking habits of house residents cannot be controlled, be sure that cigarettes are completely out before putting them in the ashtray or thrown out.

Kitchen fires

Cooking is also a major cause of house fires and injuries. Monitor your stoves when you are frying, grilling, or boiling food. Avoid leaving them unattended or have at least another person to do check-ins for you. Alternatively, you may set a timer if you are living alone.

It’s also best to keep flammable items like food packaging, towels, or curtains away from open flame. When fire spreads beyond your control, do not risk putting it out anymore. This might only block your exit when you try to escape.

All of these show how human neglect and failure can greatly influence fire disasters at home. Precaution should be a given, alongside looking into a trustworthy fire insurance policy in the Philippines to safeguard all residents at home.
