The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) is a 10-question survey. It was made by The Mission To Seafarers, a large seaport-based welfare organization. This is to ask how happy seafarers are on a scale of 1 to 10, in the key aspects of their lives onboard.
These are the questions:
- How happy are you generally when at sea?
- How happy are you about contact with family when at sea?
- How happy are you about access to shore leave?
- How happy are you about wages/salary?
- How happy are you about the food on board?
- How happy are you about your ability to keep fit and healthy on board?
- How happy are you about the training you receive?
- How happy are you about interaction with other crew on board?
- How happy are you with your workload?
- How happy are you with welfare facilities when you are ashore?
Consequently, the organization’s 2019 report shows that there is an average of only 6.14 points in total happiness from all these questions. The highest satisfaction is given to question #2 about family communication and sea connectivity with 6.96 points. On the other hand, the lowest satisfaction is given to question #10 about the quality of welfare facilities with only 5.28 points.

The survey is a great measuring tool for knowing how happy sea workers are in the various elements of their work.
