Filipinos today rely so much on recent technology that it’s unimaginable how to live without it. Filipino millennials, for instance, spend around 5 to 10 hours a day online to communicate, entertain, learn, and even work.

Ever wondered how people used to live in the earlier days? While it’s easy to be caught up in the present with technology making everything easier, learning about how people lived thousands of years ago can be quite enlightening and breathtaking.

There are so many incredible man-made wonders in this world. All of which tells a story and provides a deeper understanding of how men and women progressed, gained power, and evolved.

Here are some of the historical sites everyone should take the time to visit and learn from:

Machu Picchu

Accessible only by train or a four-day trek, Machu Picchu is a ruined city of the Inca civilization. It is laying on top of a mountain in Southern Peru. It was rediscovered by American archaeologist and politician Hiram Bingham in 1911. Deemed as the “Lost City of the Incas”, it became a beloved UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

Tikal Maya Ruins

Tikal is definitely one of the largest, best preserved, and most important Mayan civilization ruins. Located in Guatemala, it is surrounded by palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, and the like. Stone carvings and mural paintings don the surfaces of many of the existing preserve monuments.

The Pyramids at Giza

Dating over 3,000 years old, it is still a mystery how the Egyptians built the Pyramids of Giza. It was made during the time when Egyptians were the richest and most powerful civilizations in the world.

Aside from the three pyramids positioned aligned to the stars and solstices, they also vary in size. The Great Pyramid is the largest one and the only surviving structure out of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, stretches for about 400 square kilometres. An ancient city found in Cambodia, it is one of the largest religious monuments ever made. It used to be the center of the Khmer Empire – a regime that used to rule most of Southeast Asia.

Petra

Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Recently, it was included as one of the new seven wonders of the world. It’s also tagged as the Rose City because of its structures made from blushing pink sandstone. It used to house one of the lost civilizations of the world – the Nabateans, who are determined to be nomadic desert people.

Stonehenge

Considered as one of the wonders of the world, historians and archaeologists alike still puzzle over the megalithic structure. The Stonehenge, found in Salisbury, is over 3,000 years old and took an estimated 1,500 years to erect. While the monument’s outer ring was built with sandstones slabs found in local quarries, what makes scholars unsure is how the bluestones making up the inner rings were brought to the site. They were traced and found to have come from Wales – around 200 miles from where the Stonehenge sits.

The Colosseum

Visited by around 3.9 million tourists annually, the Colosseum used to be a venue for celebrations, sporting events, and bloodshed. As the massive stone amphitheater continues to crumble due to age, most of it has become restricted to tourists.

There is nothing more humbling than being able to see where humans rose from. Travelling to these historic sites is something a person must do in his lifetime. Just keep in mind that while visiting, it’s important to follow the guidelines and rules of places. This is to not cause damage to these sites that are being preserved.

And if you plan to take part in activities such as the four-day trek to Machu Picchu, ensure your safety. It is always a good idea to secure yourself with a travel insurance in the Philippines. Malayan Travel Master can give you just that with its comprehensive travel health insurance. It can cover expenses for medical emergencies, repatriation, and the like.
